I did not think folks from that society treated animals with such
disdain. Perhaps the kid shoulda married a cow, which bride would have been revered and shown proper deference.

Actually I looked into this, spoke to the dogs lawyer myself. With all the pressure we have put onto the family, A big bone was given to the dog with the promise of one per day for the rest of the year. The dog says to thank you for bringing this important subject to the fore and that she is most relieved that she wasn't expected to consumate the marriage.
