There are way too many people in our modern world to continue with tribal thinking and carry on in a humanitarian way.

And not all tribes look like tribes. Corporations, religions, rural villages... As you say, especially the two former more than the latter, they see their survival as depending on getting bigger and all-pervasive, on drowning out all Other ideas and ways of life.
There is also that element of each one of us that has tribal inclinations--maybe only sometimes, not all the time, but we need to be aware of it and even challenge those uncivil habits of thought. I think dealing with those who are essentially and fundamentally tribal brings out an equally tribal defensive reaction in generally civil minded people.

True Ciel . Little tribes can also be tolerated. Big tribes try to get bigger.
