I doubt it....I believe we can never completely escape the influence of the circumstances and influences of our times - all of them, good and bad. The fact is, we will never know and he probably didn't even as the mind and heart are complicated and retain secrets even from their owners.

My inclination was that it was not completely humanitarian. Lincoln did say at one point he would go with whatever he felt would preserve the Union.
