I suppose basically it is like most things we follow that which we have been introduced to early in life. We don't make big decisions until circumstances force us to think differently.
Apathy is probably the easiest line to take. 'It won't matter who we vote for it will all end in the same way.' It is only when a policy really appeals, something that irritates and a solution is offered. That is the wake up call, I think a lot of votes follow that because it feels personal.

I do like it in Australia where voting is compulsary. It may not feel like freedom to some but at least this way u can't just grumble about the Politicians, you have to do something and every vote counts. the more the population votes the more say the people have and the more the pollies have to tow the line as the servants of the people that they are.
