The Bible mentions marriage quite a bit...

but in reality...

The "Marriage" concept is only about 500 years old.

I don't think that the Cavemen ever got married. Or, atleast they've never found a cave'woman' with a Fox's Jewelers wedding band on her hand.

Good post

that falls on deaf ears.  Women indoctrinated in the Christian church have subconsciously devalued thier worth in human society and seldom challenge scripture that reinforces this belief.  Jesus himself called the woman at the well a "dog" which is a clear understanding of his view of a woman's place in that society.  His show of compassion to the adulteress was not for her benefit, but to show the hypocracy of the men and shame them in thier judgement of the law, were there a man who was "righteous" she would have been stoned.  Most Christians don't just read the words of Jesus, but build their faith by the words of Paul which make up the bulk of the NT.  Paul's attitude toward women was in line with the teachings of the OT and the culture of patriarchy.  I Corinthians 14: 34-35 "Let your women keep silent in the church; for it is not permitted unto them to pseakl but they are commanded to be UNDER obedience, as also saith the law.  And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home; fir it is a SHAME for women to speak in church."  Also, for those who want to argue, Ephesians 5:22-23 " Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.  For the HUSBAND is the HEAD of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church (He who knows all and makes laws to be followed) and is the savior of the body (is see a veild threat here, that a woman who stands against her husbands desire is in jeopardy of death).  As for the importance or equality of women read: I Corinthians 11:7-10, "For a man. . .is the image and GLORY of God; but the woman is the GLORY of the man. For the man is not of the woman (hmmm...seems to me he was birthed by his mother); but the woman of the man (back to the perversion of woman's nature) Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman FOR the man."

To this day, women are not autonomous, self defining females.  We are "ALLOWED" to be equal to men, to dress and perform according to the rules men have established--to be man-like--hardly liberating.

the church's fault?
I don't think it's always the church's fault that people use religion as a means to justify their actions. Some churches might be that way, but certainly not all. I think people find ways to make what they are doing seem "right" all by themselves, without organized religion telling them to do so.

Yeah
And that has been one of my big beefs with Organized Religion. If people just would go and form their own personal beliefs, without some church sitting there telling them what parts to follow and what parts not to follow, then the world would be a better place.

i agree
I agree that sometimes people just take what they want to hear from religion and use it to excuse their bad behavior. It's not a good thing, but that doesn't mean that the actual beliefs themselves are bad, it just means the way people are choosing to twist them is bad.

Once more it comes to the OT vs. the NT on that issue. Although many followers of the NT seem to feel they can treat women as property. Remember it did take over a thousand years before anyone decided to listen to the idea that women had rights, as well as slave. One thing that I sitll have not been able to get across even though it is something that seems to be always in the background of my posts, is that what is said does not matter as much as what is learned and how it is used. The Bible gives a lot of lessons, but those lesson are often what is not taken from the Bible, instead people use the bad examples more often and follow those as their way of life.

The society was that way, but...

the Bible does not condone that behavior, especially the words of Jesus.

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." ~ Galatians 3:28. This clearly says one is not better than the other.

Look at John 8:3-11. Some people came to Jesus and wanted to stone an adulteress, as was the custom. Jesus did not tell them it was okay to do so. He said, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first one to throw a stone at her." Needless to say, the woman did not get stoned.

People might use the Bible as an excuse to make women feel second-class, but that doesn't mean the Bible says it's okay.

Look back at our country's history and you will see we were no better than the Middle East at one time. Up until about a hundred years ago, women were not considered men's equals through out most of the world. Women have been treated like property time and time again. And I do know of people alive today who treat women like property still. And they use the Bible to justify their actions. In fact there are relgions that fuction in the US that do still put women into a submissive roll to their husbands.

The middle eastern culture has never recognized women as equals to men. This is America. We don't hold the same values and traditions as they do. Worldwide most cultures despise the way women are treated in the Middle East. Just because one culture feels a certain way about one thing does not make it true for all of us.

No, your ideas were not well-thought-out. Nor were they well- spelt.
