I think Covey said it best in his 7 Habits...Seek First to Understand and Then to Be Understood....I have found that to be perhaps the most powerful  of the habits and especially with younger people.  It's so easy to concentrate on only trying to get our own points across ....and we learn so much in listening, truly listening, first to what the other person is saying...not only to learn but to really know what it is that we have to respond to.  We often just have all these points we're trying to make that we don't even know what it is we need to really be addressing, what the real beef is....we may have passed go a long time ago!

and in Australia they are wanting to take away very substantial Gov. financial support from people who refuse vaccinations. Science has concluded that there is no risk of autism, there mat be side affects from  the fluid that the vaccine is in...is why one waits around after to ensure all is well.

I sometimes state my case but refuse to engage in argument with nuts on FB.

I just steer clear of that site, although the youngsters are leaving for different ones.So the paper said today. I expect some nutters just wait to argue getting as buzz out of doing so.

I echo Ciel's sentiments...There are some wackos on the comment sections. I know The Baltimore Sun no longer allows for comments to be posted because the goofy fringes were dominating the "discussions."

My choice is not to engage in futile argument with people who are 100%

sure they can't be wrong.  A good, rational discussion, on the other hand, can be wonderfully stimulating.

You do make some excellent points here, about hearing and being open-minded--to, at the very least, understand the other person's perspective. I just like to know that they are open to mine, as well--to understanding it and allowing that I have the right to hold to it. If not, if they are only trying to essentially prosletize me, then I am not interested.

You will not win in cases like that, except that you have already won. You know what you find to be factual as can be and that is enough. He does not want his opinion tested. As to faith I believe anyone who does not believe has that right just as I have a right to know without any doubt I have faith in a Living God without any reservations with the assurance closer than science. However I think that is a position belonging to only those who choose it.

I admire your patience! I would have just gone on to other things, since the guy is an idiot, and time is too precious to deal with idiots...
