While I agree with you in general terms, your comment to Kris made me grin - "...they took it from the indigenous people..."

Kind of like Europeans "took" America from the Indians, and how some settlers then "took" the land from Britain to form their own country...?  Technically, we're all immigrants in this land.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from being a supporter of native american rights. But I'm not above smiling at the irony

An American Indian reading this would probably be thinking 'Paybacks are a b-tch!'

I wouldn't begin to try to talk history with you as I certainly don't remember mine!  I'm just saying, as someone who grew up in Texas, around the history, around the issues here, that is a large part of the problem - I have even been told straight out by an old Mexican woman who used to do work around here, "You just don't understand, to our way of thinking, Texas belongs to us."  Now, you can argue with that all day long....but it won't change the votes or the actions.

Krisles....My friend....don't drink the kool-aid.

It's been over 5 generations since the War of Mexican Aggression.  The people living in the area of the southwest and controlling it were not from the area.  They took it from the indigenous populations.

After Mexico surrendered...we paid the Mexican government $15 million dollars for the Southwestern territory....a tidy sum in those days.  (We paid $15 million to France for the Louisiana Purchase for a lot more land and of higher value than the desert areas of the SW.)  Should the French be allowed to occupy Iowa?

BTW...Expansion all the way to the Pacific Coast had been the goal of President James K. Polk, (the leader of the Democratic Party)

Absolutely.....under the amnesty they'll have the opportunity to work toward accumulating retirement....and a wall would help stop future arrivals....hitting two birds, etc.   And no, of course, all of the illegals who are magically forgiven will have enough working years or are physically able to accumulate any kind of retirement....there is no perfect answer.  We have to decide if we are a nation of laws or not.

It is a fact that these border states used to belong to Mexico and that just a couple or hree generations ago the gr-grandparents of these illegals were in their own country when they lived in these states where they are now called names....it's a hard issued not faced in a lot of the country other than we are an immigrant nation.  But, we are a nation of laws....and we fought wars and battles and we established our borders and the laws are clear.  So we either defend them or we do not...period...simple and clear.  Or do we become Americo?
