Your writing reminds me of the 1970;s when hippies were  proliferating around the world

Sounds more like our villages were 50 years ago. Of course a lot were related vaguely as in the old days it was perhaps 5 miles from the next hamlet and not much choice in other directions . Fairs provided a introduction to new blood providing some kind of transport was available . Horse and wagon I expect. So it was natural for foreigners to be treated with suspicion especially if they took a house or cottage that had been earmarked for a cousin, or other kin. Your natural ability for friendship and clever awareness probably pushed you up the ladder to be accepted. A nice series.

Vt

It seems to be the case virtually in all small towns. I noticed the same thing in Nova Scotia - unless you were born there, you were 'from away', no matter how many years you had lived there...

VT01

My mom moved to this old German town in Texas over 30 years ago and she is still really an outsider and the town now is divided between he oldtimers and the younger generation who want to make it a destination tourist town like neighboring towns...while the oldtimers want to keep it closed and just like it is.  Small town cultures are very interesting, even in very large states.

I was born into one of those country areas so understand the mentality of wariness of outsiders, but her where we live it is somewhat darker. Secrets that the old families know about that they keep close to the chest from outsiders like us. Oh and me being from Australia makes it almost impossible to find friendships. I mean that is just too different for them. ...in fact it shouldn't be but never mind.

I have never been to Vermont, but from what I have read and heard, it does strike me as a state that is like a town where everyone knows everyone.
