Re: kabu

when i am out in the garden talking to myself and nature i will think of you with your fairies and gnomes.  its another world for us to enjoy when we are in our gardens, good for the soul and do take it easy, patience is a virtue.

Re: justi

i do not do it well, but i am learning that patience is better than perfection.

Re: adnohr

exactly, we dont know what we can do until we are forced to do it.  and yes it is grand to be able to say i can do it......it is sweeter to have a help mate, soul mate, companion, but if you do not life can still be fun and satisfying.

Re: cct

unless i get some goats and chickens and maybe a crop it is too large to just keep up, i need to make it work for me and make a little money, dont need a lot, just enough to get by. half an acre is a hugh garden.  cct fire does not scare me , come to think of it not much scares me except for mean people.

Re:ipp

i have choices to make now and how much money i have is a big factor.  i would give anything to travel, but then i think make the best of where i am and use the land to its fullest.  animals i stay at home, with just lucy she could travel with me.

Re: fsi

maybe it is a regional thing.  the farmers around here originally all came from kansas  where i grew up and it is done there too.

Re: Jimmy

when i was a kid in kansas it was the practice too, burning off the lawn.  i have stories about that too.  nothing like sitting outside in the evenings , after a shower and a days work in the garden.

Re: naut

i have thought about getting milk goats, but i have not made up my mind because i will be tied down and if i want to travel it will be hard with to many animals to take care of..... just have to decide what to do with the rest of my life.  goats, chickens or maybe quail or pheasant.  another dog.  i think of being a farmer and forgetting the travel.  i could make and sell goat cheese, goat milk soap and eggs.  the other dog is for lucy

Re: krisles

you might inquire at the fire dept, sometimes they will do it as a training exercise.

Re: wiley

when we were kids you could not keep us in the house, maybe that is why as adults we love being outside.

Re: v1

you have to be real careful when you burn, it gets out of control quickly, a hose nearby is a necessity

Jean

Funny you should mention this as I just caught the tail-end of a televised class by the local ranchers co-op on doing a controlled burn and have been thinking that's what I need to do at both the lake and part of my mom's yard because they have both been decimated by the draught and lack of care for several years.  Also, especially at the lake I really want to get a few areas of wild flower plots going.  I'm going to call the fire dept and see if they give classes.  I'm surprised by these comments....maybe it's just a ranch country thing.

Burning off the lawn? That's a strange one! In this neck of the woods there are by-laws against burning virtually anything...And with four acres of lawn, you migth have enough for a couple of sheep...

I've never heard of that practice of 'burning off one's lawn,' but it does sound somewhat dangerous! I too don't mind yard work at all. It's wonderful exercise, everything looks great when all is said and done, and that nice, hot shower afterward feels splendid! However, it appears it will still be quite some time before I'll be firing up my lawn mower . . .

So important it is to live every moment to the fullest. In this hectic day and age, with people always on the go, it is so important for us to remind one another of that.

I have never done any lawn burning at any of my residences.

You go girl, four acres, that a feat.  I don't have much to tend here.  The association does the blowing and raking for us.  I do have to tend the ivy and get the atrium and deck.

I love to plant flowers.  So rewarding to me.  Joe complains about the 40 buck I spend.  I think that is better than his now $50,000 in debt.

Well Jean it is nice to have ground to mess around on. 4 acres is quite a large amount to keep tidy. When I had that much eventually I let it go wild, but I was always afraid of fire.

Half an acre is about as much as we can garden at the moment,

I know what you mean. When I found myself alone, I was surprised at what I could do, and the sense of accomplishment is just grand! The best way to remember those we have loved is to talk about them, and smile for the good times we had with them, I find.

It sounds like you really enjoy doing your yard work and do it vey well.

For me there is nothing better than the garden, the outdoors. I go off into my own inner world and so enjoy myself it is almostlike meditation....well the fairies and Gnomes do ge tinto my thoughts too. Lol. I am slow too. Very slow and a couple of hours a day is plenty of time for me to be outside and even then i take constant breaks.
