Re: CCT,

You invent new stuff in your writing all the time!

Briefs optional.  Be comfortable.

We do need all the aids we can get, to communicate adequately!

Re: FormerStudentIntern.

In fact, the spacing and marks began as clues to orators presenting the written word to an audience, so they'd know where to pause and how to inflect.

Re: adnohr,

It's interesting how many old saws actually don't hold up every time, and, in fact, how many old saws actually contradict other old saws.

I agree with your wholeheartedly. Those grammar and puncations are very important to the equations, helping make it easier for the reader to read. I also find as a writer that they help as well.

I guess the 'ruels are made to be broken' doesn't hold water on this?

It seems logical to me  the conventions are there to make sure what a. means when she says something to b. is exactly what b. hears (or reads). Since we're all brought up with a slightly different dictionary in our heads, the wonder is that we manage to be on the same page anytime, no matter how conscientious we are about our grammar, punctuation, etc.

I think I shall have to invent ideas to stumble around the norm Ceil . I wish I had been able to learn when I was young, I remember learning shorthand and it seemed so easy.

Fortunately not many know the rules, but I will always wear my briefs when relying to you in future.  I hate italics in a story and just skip over them.
