The 16 D probably has twice as many fakes out there than real dated coins. There was a 'crime family' back in the late 1950's called the "Busby Gang" and they made thousands of the 16 D, the 09S VDB, and the 1877 Indian. They were darn good at it too!

I did not know that coin was counterfeited so much.

Sorry, I had been busy these past few days, but I think I'm all caught up now.

What probably amazes me the most about these counterfeit coins is that, like you stated, buyers need to be 'eduacted' about what is real and what is faked. But apparently, the counterfeiters themselves needed to be educated first as well! Like anything else, if you don't really pay attention . . .  Fortunately, I suppose, for the various dealers, they're already familiar with these coins, and know what to look for! It's obviously a tough racket . . .
