Of course it's ridiculous! Our ancestors didn't run to the nearest supermarket for their food when there was talk of snow in the forecast - they got stuff out of their root cellar, and maybe murdered a chicken for supper...:)

I find it the same up here FSI...I am sure that generations ago they did have to have a store room full of supplies to survive the winters but the snow plows keep our roads open and so long as the power isn't affected, we are perfectly fine here. People though stock up big just like your area.
