Re: JimmyA

Well, Sir Wiley, I did do some quick research, and it turns out that our Canadian cousins are fairing a bit better than us Yanks! According to what I found, homicides in general ( regardless of the day of the week ) are down considerably all throughout Canada ( and generally far less than here in the states ). The U.S. leads all countries in homicides, with Canada a very distant fifth. By province, it seems that the good people of Manitoba are leading the pack in homicides, with Quebec a distant seventh! Does that help at all . . . ?

Re: Jimmy

Well, C C T, we all know what happened during the Dark Ages and the Spanish Inquisition, and those events took place over 500 years ago! Have we improved as a society since then? It doesn't seem so! The only thing that has 'improved' are the weapons themselves and the ways in which we can use them on each other! Perhaps in a thousand years . . .

Re: Jimmy

Unfortunately, Naut, that's all too true. In fact, I guess it's somewhat logical to believe ( although I'm obviously not rooting for it ) that things will get worse before they get better! And I'm sorry but, I have to blame the easy accessibility to guns for that! Our current gun laws are just not working! But of course, that's a topic for another day . . .

Re:

It's tough to think about, lovelylady, but obviously there are people out there who can only be pushed so far. Then, something compels them to pick up a gun and kill someone! I can't fathom the mindset of these people just before they pull that trigger! Their brains must be mush by that time . . .

Re:

And that's all we can do, FSI. I'm sure there are a myriad of reasons for these people doing what they do, but taking someone else's life is never justifiable ( unless it's blatant self-defense, of course ). However, I know that doesn't apply in these cases! Yes, very disturbing statistics indeed . . .

Re: I think the "cure" for workplace shootings and other violence is not

Needless to say, Pat, I cannot argue with anything you've said. Unfortunately, we both know the realities of the current state of our society, and 'random acts of kindness' are slowly giving way to 'random acts of violence.' I'm sure there are many reasons for this, but that certainly doesn't help the victims of these acts much! I myself have had several 'run ins' with co-workers over the years who had irked me beyond normal patience, but I never felt the urge to kill any of them, primarily because I knew that would be a death-sentence for myself! Unfortunately, rational thinking is on the decline as well . . .

Jimmy

It does seem unreal when these strange facts are revealed. I guess we are not truly civilised at the present time, perhaps in 500 years we might be?

That is an absolute shock to me, I wonder what the figure is for Canada. You're the research guy, find out about Canada pard.

It would be interesting to get data on age, sex, personal characteristics, relative positions etc. on both perps and victims...And while I agree with Pat, any of that ain't gonna happen anytime soon...

I just can't fathom why people do this to each other...

Some disturbing statistics there. And it does not include murder attempts in the workplace nor does it include fights. Here is to hoping that things change for the better.

I think the "cure" for workplace shootings and other violence is not

gun control, but more kindness. If we practice what we learned in Mr. Rogers' Neighorhood about patience and counting to four before we react to someone else's thoughtlessness, we might not do something we'll regret. More importantly if bosses had rational expectations and showed a bit of appreciation, time on the job might be rewarding instead of frustrating.
