Re: jimmy

I personally feel, jean, that many people should share that sentiment! War is a terrible thing, but sometimes you have to 'fight fire with fire.' And that's exactly what these brave young men did. My dad was only 13 years-old at the time of D-Day, but had told us that his cousin Johnny was one of those killed on Omaha Beach. That brought the war very close to home. But fortunately, they knew his death was not in vein, and he was remembered and eulogized for his sacrifice. Seventy years later, they still have not forgotten, and neither should we . . .

wow a beautiful tribute and post for d day.  so many do not understand that those that survived made sacrifices that carried on for many years, what they carried in their minds and sometimes their bodies affected not only them but their families.  their sons and husbands and fathers came home not the same person as when they left. i for one am ashamed that that sacrifice was not honored.

Re:

As we all should, lovelylady! When you watch certain movies made about the Normandy Invasion and WW II in general, it's sometimes difficult to get a real sense of what these men were going through. But there were many news crews on hand filming the actual events as they were unfolding, and when you see any of these images, reality comes crashing in, and you become even more aware of the turmoil these men faced! We should never forget what happened on this historical date, and should always honor and praise these brave individuals for all eternity . . .

Re:

Thanks, C C T. And you're right. Many people during WW II showed amazing resiliency in standing up to Hitler and his Third Reich, especially the great citizens of London and other parts of England. They went toe-to-toe with these German Huns for years and years, and persevered! It was, indeed, their 'finest hour!' Let's hope that no one forgets what happened during the first half of the 1940's . . .

Re:

I guess I could have, Kabu, but I'm not sure how well-received this piece might have actually been, considering my slight 'knock' on the next generation! No one likes to admit to their mistakes, especially if it involves millions of people! But I'm glad everyone here enjoyed it . . .

Re: Jimmy

Thanks, Naut. I tried to be both succinct and poignant. I'm actually hoping that many others feel the same way. Sometimes I try to imagine what would have happened today if Europe was going through a similar regression as it had during the Third Reich. What would we do, and how much support would we get? Something tells me a Normandy-type invasion would have failed miserably, for several reasons, not the least of which would be the probability of the news media tipping off our enemies to everything we were going to attempt! The times they have a-changed indeed . . .

Re:

That would be nice, FSI. I hate to sound pessimistic, but there are times when it seems that the only way a ship can be 'righted' is if it's still floating! Once it sinks to the bottom . . .

It is amazing what ordinary people will do when one's back is against the wall.

Nice sensible piece Jimmy.

You have expressed it so well, there's really nothing left to add!

I agree with ou 100%, Jimmy. Hopefully, those of us in subsequent generations can right the ship.
