Two reasons, I feel:

1. Players are given the big money to lead teams to championships

2. Theoretically, players are playing against the best, and people measure what one does against the best.

I believe only a small percentage of fans may do that, and it's largely because there have been plenty of athletes in every sport that post excellent regular season numbers, only to virtually disappear when their respective playoffs begin. Fans want championships, and you can't win championships with subpar playoff numbers. But the 'true' fan will step back and consider all the stats and numbers an athlete has accumulated over their careers, and that's all that should really matter . . .
