I believe you are correct . . .
It is the story about the young man hitching a ride from college to his home town about 120 miles away to see his mother who had suffered a mild stroke . . . .

Did you mean Riding The Bullet?
Rather than 'Ride'? Sorry to be pedantic! I was just searching out the novel in e-book format but could only find Riding The Bullet which I remember reading now; great story.

It's hardly normal . . . .
But it is not part of the Dark Tower series. It is a stand-alone story about a young man and his relationship with . . . well, I don't want to spoil the story for you!
