I agree about too much homework!
I teach school and sometimes I really do hate the "system" too. I do not believe in overloading kids with homework, but I am not normal. ha! I require 20 pages of reading a night. Period. That's it for 8th grade kids. They have too much in their Math and Social Studies classes. It is nuts. They need a life! I think it's an ego trip sometimes, "well I gave this much>>>blah, blah" or some teachers make up for what they can't teach in school so they overload it. More parents should complain about the homework. A lot of parents though want it. There are some really good public schools. There are some wonderful teachers too. You have to look. My kids have been in both private and public schools. One private was lousier than any public school they attended. One private was wonderful For the most part, we were lucky. Their public school experience was pretty good. Hey, they can read. My oldest is graduating from college in May!!! You gotta thank somebody for that!

We didn't have toys when I was a kid....
I grew up in Florida and we practically lived outside. Swimming, running through the groves, climbing trees, sleeping under the stars. Hide - N - Seek at night was right up there, too, along with making up our own games. "Horse Show" was one of them - we played the horses AND the riders!

Yes, my kid WAS outside playing until the stupid school councelor
called Child Protection Services to tell them he was seen by the pool which was about one yard away. And he knew how to swim, too, since kindergarten! If it weren't for all the homework (at fourth grade, he has WAY TOO MUCH) he would have more time to play. Maybe we would even have some family time! I HATE the public school system - and it's their own fault.
