Just be you
Many of those people aren't ignoring you. Just absorbed in their own shit. Unconditional listening is a much sought out quality. People will seek you out for it.

Do you have children? If you have children, the world will pay you back
when you're too busy to answer their one millions questions and requests.

Learning to get your needs met....

...part of it is acting with the assurance that people *want* to meet your needs.  Not everyone, of course, but there will always be people willing to help and assist when they can.

When you greet people, offer more than just hello.  Offer some conversation starters - simple and cheesy things like talking about the weather, or whatever it is you're gathered there to do.  If someone doesn't respond, then just smile and move on.  My brother has a friend he's known for 20 years that he met in a line at college - it was the line to the place where you signed up for shared housing.  He and the guy behind him were like "you looking for a roommate?  Me, too".  That was two decades ago, and they are still friends.

It sounds like you were at a writer's workshop, so you all had something in common.  "Have you been to one of these before"  "My best work is poetry, but I'd really like to write a column - what about you??"  Anything to break the ice.  "Coffee?"

Talking with people really isn't as hard as people think - most people are happy to talk to you as long as you aren't annoying or wasting their time.   The others may be having a bad day or a bad life, and can be left alone.

I think you're too concerned about what others think-you are sensitive to their moods and feelings and affected by their response (or lack of it) to your presence. Stop thinking about them and just live in the moment. Everyone's never gonna like you no matter what.

good ?
It is not you, humans are sooooo self absorbed that most are incapable of noticing they are missing the human experience.Be glad you are not like that and do your best to make sure others do not feel likewise.
