I understand your concern for the general safety of the pitchers, but there's two things to consider. First, many of those line-drive returns may go directly at the pitcher's face ( a very unpleasant prospect, of course ), which the helmet will not deflect, rendering it practically useless! And secondly, those line-drive returns are extremely rare! I think many a pitcher will struggle with general comfort having a heavy helmet on their heads as opposed to a simple cap. I'm not sure what the alternative may be, but I just don't think helmets are the answer . . .
