I don't think it matters Jay. It depends if one wishes to commercialize ones idea's.

 If so one must write to please an audience, not oneself. Sadly poetry is up against it, in the old days the lack of entertainment was probably a boost for any written jingle. People change with new ideas and demands. Life blood of imaginative people has been diluted by the extreme variety of stimulus on offer. As you said once before people prefer gossip, I think this is true to some extent as they are able to judge other folk against themselves and at times feel superior. Perhaps these days poems stir uncomfortable thoughts in some folk, unless they are gentle breezy offerings or of a risqué type.

It is like being alone on an island that dissolves after one has been committed to the fact that one can make it exist.
