Oh wow! I can't even imagine being a near-miss survivor.
When Son #1 was in the NAVY, stationed in Japan, he made friends with a Mamasan who had survived Hiroshima as a child, but all of her family had been killed. He visited her every time he was in Tokyo because she made such an impression on him. The thing she always wanted him to tell her about was his mother and his homelife as a child.
