I think finding other sources of funding for parades is a good idea. Better to change than to vanquish! Hopefully the sponsors would be doing it for the right reasons and not try to turn them into profit making ventures which would lead to an exclusionary effect in this economy. Some of my best childhood memories are parade related..:) 
And yes I think the world drawing together in a humane effort to help those devastated people in the Philippines could create a sense of communal sharing and cooperation that would be a nice change. But as in sponsors for parades, greed based agendas can be a cold, stinging deluge wiping out or weakening any good. The world has participated jointly in the past to help other nations, but "shock doctrines" of greed usually reared their ugly heads..
