I remember reading the Bible from cover to cover as a child. Several times. Why? Because I thought God was punishing me for being a bad child, all because my mother was dying of a horrible disease. The reading brought another horror: The stories were of such anger and violence that, perversely, I now felt guilty for feeling like I desired an answer as to why Mom suffered! There was no winning!

"Reading the mind of God," as fundamentalists attempt to do with their literalism, is of course a monunentally mendacious act of arrogance. That arrogance spills over into their daily life, into their neighborhoods, into the community, and finally into the nation. We are seeing that arrogance come to full fruition today, with this country's first dictator at the helm (he officially became that when key legislation from the Patriot Act and its evil spawn, Patriot Act II, were signed into law). Literalism assumes the unassumable. It equates rational discourse with recipe acting and being. It condemns free will, all the while purporting to uphold it. And it assigns God a personal torturer for those who exercise his greatest gift to us. I'd be laughing if it weren't so friggin' scary.
