When I'm cooking I have only the faintest idea what I'm doing or how it's going to turn out - I never follow the instructions (recipes). But I frequenty surprise myself - it's actually edible more often than not...

Those implied instructions are terrible!!!! I do not confuse my brain with them. I am with you on some of these and your brother is wrong in assuming anything about laziness.

Reading and following the directions will lead to gettting it right the first time and no frustration when half way things go awry. I agree with you.

My brother always says read the instructions, you are so lazy. It does pay in the long run if one can understand what the instructions imply.

I would never get anything together if I didn't read the directions

I have gotten to where I do read the directions as well. I had to create a system recovery disk for my new laptop and read the directions. Just a few years ago, I would either skipped the directions and tried to figure out or just skimmed them, but like you, I now see the benefit in doing so.

Some people do like a challenge, and like to figure things out on their own. But in most cases, if there are any type of specific instructions to follow, why take chances? The "trial & error" method is one thing, but I believe it is far less frustrating to simply follow the directions and maybe . . . just maybe . . . get it right the first time!
