I think I may be one of those rare individuals who never, ever texts! I would much rather simply "talk" to the person! But you're right . . . this texting nonsense has turned a whole generation of people into babbling fools who feel the need to take short cuts with almost everything they do! I honestly believe that the young kids today who are so terribly caught up in this current wave will suffer for it down the road, and so will the rest of us when they eventually take over certain businesses and services . . .

I remember watching a couple years ago on How the States Got Their Shape about how texting and the Internet have influenced language in the United States...As for me, I have to admit that I am guilty of it. I only text for business reasons and use that shorthand because I find keying in a number a few times to get to a letter tedious. I do not have a keyboard...As far as Blogit goes, I do use LOLs and BTW in comments...I Just hope that it does not make its way into works of writing.

If you liked Shakedown though, I would also recommend you check out Mark Steyn's America Alone (I believe I saw his name in one of your earlier posts...).

Very interesting piece! I must tell you I don't text, though I have picked up some of the 'texting words'(?), such as 'lol' or even 'LOL', using them here on Blogit. And, like you, I am very concerned about our language, and I read a lot, having usually three or four books going at the same time, although few of them are novels, unfortunately...
