As a Canadian, I don't comment on US domestic problems. I only concern myself with the Amateur's (according to Bill Clinton) disastrous foreign policies...

I always thought of sequester as a kind of shelter from

the slings and arrows... You're right, this current use of the word is downright perverted. I, too, like your unnamed speechifier, wish they'd all get off their duffs and put on their thinking caps. 500 of the smartest, best educated folks in America and they can't even pass a freaking budget?

I take my comment back - it isn't much ado about nothing. Have been reading up on it this morning, and found this:

The only group that could escape furloughs are some 1,500 presidential appointees, including Cabinet positions, deputy secretaries and assistant secretaries. That's because those jobs are considered 24-hour-a-day positions, said Max Stier, president and CEO of Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit that advocates for a more efficient federal workforce.

Most of those workers are at the top of the federal pay scale, Stier said.
