Ciel, this is a very timely and thought-provoking, as also a.disturbing article, and along with women, men should also take upon themselves to save and protect the honor of women; society should be so trained and the law so designed as to act as a deterrent to criminals, at most times they are seen going scot free. This is intolerable.

Re: Sinome,

It is such a struggle to know what to do when it is your own family that needs the wake-up call, the challenge to something they think is perfectly normal and all right, and you are the only one making a fuss.

Re: Pat,

there are a lot of men who don't get what rape is, or why it's a problem. I recall a quote from one who said, "If that's rape, then all my sex is rape."

And they still think... men and women alike... that "she must have been asking for it."

In some cultures, the Serpent of Eden is the mythic equivalent of Prometheus.

Its easy to forget, living our busy daily lives, that we women are still regarded as lesser than men in many parts of the world and that even here, in the good all USA, you scratch the surface of a group of ol' boys and a comment derrogatory of or condescending to women emerges.  Pat B said it right when she pointed out that rape is still considered a sex crime and not a power trip... BUt, the truth is that more and more we hear of progress being made, albait slowly, in the status of women as simple human beings.  I see it in the way news are reported as for example the article on those two girls you mentioned.  Years past what happened to them would not have been news worth it and no one would have found out about it. I see it in my son inlaws and their treatment of my daughters, in my son's friends and their conversations... Most men today if they do not "feel" differently than their grandfathers did at least they "know" they are supposed to.  Progress is progress I guess... and I for one will take as much or as little as I can get, but I agree taht we must keep talking about these issues so that they never ever are swept under the rug again.   Thank you for such a thought provoking post Ciel  xoxoxo

Say it like it is, Sistah! Didn't we have this conversation 40 years ago?

And yet they still think rape is a sex crime, not a power trip. They still think a woman who's raped can throw off the rapist's seed. They still cover up for their good old boy buddies and ignore what coach is doing to little boys in the shower. And they still blame Eve for sharing the fruit of the tree of knowledge.
