controversyme

A very good and enjoyable response, well written too. One mustn't confuse the Old Testament with religious edicts, like the Koran, for example, which demands adherence to every word written in it. As for Jewish men staying away from their wives during menstruation … this is a very interesting subject to which I shall  come back some other time, if I may. Keep writing and I shall be happy to read you and to let you have my pennies. NB for the avoidance of misunderstandings take care to read me well! Pennies, not penis.

Ruth

Hello Pannonian, I'm familiar with the story of Ruth. Thank you for thinking of me when posting this. It seems my poem has raised some eyebrows, which is always a good thing in my view. I want to reference IV Kings Ch. 9, V29 where Jezebel is slain and eaten by dogs. Surely this is not a particularly, um, pretty scene in the bible, would you agree? Although there are many beautiful stories that can be found, there are also many violent stories. As ace pointed out in his comment the bibles parables and metaphors have been interpreted in many different ways, in many different languages, over many, many years, by many different people. My point is that, although as you have referenced, there is beauty within the pages of the bible, it is all left up to the interpretation of the reader. I think that one can find anything one desires and interpret it in anyway they see fit. Wars have been started over religion, some men, because of their interpretation of the bible believe that women are their property, sent only to please man in every way. Some men believe it is not only their right but their duty to discipline their wives for "disobedience" It's referenced in the pages of the bible that a woman is unclean and should be cast apart when she is on her period. There are many such things I can point out that I interpret as disrespectful and violent toward women. So I'm not implying there is no beauty in the pages of the bible, I'm simply pointing out that there is also much violence and degredation towards women within its pages that I cannot ignore. The pretty does not cover up the ugly.

Thank you for your visit, read and comment Pannonian. I appreciate it and different points of view are always welcomed and encouraged. I enjoy it when people are thinking, and look at what my poem inspired, it inspired you to find and post the book of Ruth, so not only did I get to enjoy it, many others who may never have had the opportunity to read about her, now have.
