Often, I think these models are ways to illustrate dynamics that work to amend damaged psyches. The 'Parts' model has the same thing: you, your Self, converse and interact with such Parts as that Child--specifically, that part of you that identifies itself as a child, with particular fears or concerns. One possible interaction, is exactly what you describe.

Hmmm.
I believe my child, parent, adult analogy came from John Grey, who had a pretty good run on PBS several years ago. He's the one who suggested a therapeutic technique of visualizing your adult self holding the inner child and assuring her you'd always be there to protect her. That was then. Now I think your analogy is more to the point and useful.
