It is worth trying GB one offers one's life there should be a pay back in rough times. Sadly this is a very low point in most folks lives, many looked on their house as security, it just is not working out that way. Charities bombard one with mail most days, I think in good times you would have had a reasonable response, I would go for the Vets definitely.
