Curious what an animal with heart and soul can do for a large group of people. I went to watch "Secretariat" and felt the same way.  I still have a vague memory of his pulling ahead of the other horese with 20+ laps over the likely winner in the race , but knew none of the other inspiring details of overcoming behind the scenes or that he was not even supposed to have the endurance to run that race.  Glad that Australia had theirs.

Melbourne Cup Day...place your bets please

Your entry about Melbourne Cup Day reminded my husbsnd about something that happened to him on Melbourne Cup Day when I read it out to him, and so I felt inspired to write about it on my blog today Kabu.  It's called: 'A run in with the police' ha ha.

Your blog entries are always interesting Kabu.

Funny story about your bet... LOL ~ oh my that is how I would be.  I've done many a blunder in those places.  Good luck and I hope the Melbourne placed whichever, whomever was chosen to favor or even the underdog me...speaking of dogs.  C Elyse xoxox stay bundled.

I would have messed up with the form as well.  Too bad you lost that first dollar wagered.

I remember the name Far Lap. I think he ran in the same decade
as the great Dan Patch, a trotting horse from this area. I know there was a movie about Dan Patch, and I keep thinking there was one about Far Lap as well.

I've only been to a race track once, and that was to eat at a friend's 60th birthday party.. - (Rumor at the track, looking for the dining hall)

Well Kabu it was a bit of excitement in those days a few bob on the favorite. Something to talk about. I can picture you pushing the old pram along, well in suppose you had your kids. The girls wouldn't stick it now and you can't blame them. I always remember my mother saying she was standing on a grass verge with a rabbit skin in her hand holding it with a piece of paper as the village folk always brought the skins out for my father to take back to a merchant who dealt in scrap. She told me she was standing there and thought to herself whatever am I doing standing here with a rabbit skin in my hand. Formally she had a position as a lady's maid and took the dogs out for walks etc.

We live about five minutes away
from Newmarket but I have not yet been to any race meetings there, yet it is the 'home' of English flat racing.

I use to love the horse races, and would bet on the color that the jockey was wearing or the name of the horse, so scientific studies
