sunny, i tend to agree with straightforward. To be uncomfortable is different that pain and suffering.  If the word is uncomfortable then yes, i to think we she be in a state of being uncomfortable.  It is good to be uncomfortable when viewing others hardships.  My understanding of ego is that to be enlightened you have to give up ego. To give up your ego is to feel a oneness with all life. Or you might say to be able to walk in anybodies shoes. To surrender your ego for a family member, friend or your loved ones is one thing, but for a stranger, perhaps someone on the other side of the world is beyond me. One last thing that came to mind while reading this blog was that I have been under the impression that giving is not giving if it comes easy.  The only example i can think of is the poor woman that gave a penny and the rich man gave a millon, but in the sight of God, the poor womans gift was worth more because she could not afford it and it did not hurt the rich man to his million.  Read on sunny!

I haven't read the book, but I think i get the drift from your post. What
is perhaps suggested is that when one is comfortable, one is complacent. So one does not think of striving to end pain and suffering. One has to be restless or agitated about things to do something - in that sense not comfortable. Thus not comfortable is not equal to pain and suffering. Restlessness or agitation is not equal to pain and suffering. The latter are different concepts, or so I think.
