Reminds me of the first time I went to NYC as an adult
I was just blown away all of the people who were homeless.  Recently, I was homeless for a short time, at no fault of my own, but I was one of the lucky ones.  I never had it as bad as those I saw in NYC.

Re: janey, I love the use of "stone towers" passing by - those who have
You are so right, at some point, the towers come crashing down!

Re: I thought this was such a thought provoking write
At times, I am too judgemental and I agree about the culture and the wealthy of the country.  I had hoped my poem would speak more to "humanity" as a whole and how in someways we are all beggars needing someone t reach out in compassion.  Oh well, need to go back and rewrte to get that message across.

It is hard to see people in need.

Re:
In some places, it's overwhelming.   I have found, a smile affirming them as another human being gives them some dignity.  Compassion is displayed in many ways, one being acknowledgement.  thanks for visiting.

I saw a beggar on the street corner, trying to get the attention of the passers by.  I felt compassion for her plait, I hear her cries with in my head, but I cannot help for there are far to many standing on the many street corners looking the same.

If you don't intend to be benevolent, or be helpful in any way,
don't look at them, especially don't look into their eyes,
what you see there will tear out your heart,
and will ruin your plans for a great day.

I thought this was such a thought provoking write
Your imagery is superb and the subject very provoking. For me it depends on the culture, the wealth of the country. I am too judgemental I know.

janey, I love the use of "stone towers" passing by - those who have
everything, but feelings and emotions..but those stone towers could, as has already been commented, crumble tomorrow.....

And that was the "intended" point of my poem.  I intended the reader to notice that the emphasis had switched from the beggar to those walking by; thus, whether wealthy or poor, we are all beggars, we all need compassion extended.  The last stanza switches from those walking by to the beggar reaching out to extend a hand.   Your comments help me evaluate what words I could have changed to communicate this message better.  Thanks

Re:
Thanks, but I don't think I got my intended message across very well.

Re:
So true Corncake, even if it's just making eye contact and smiling.

Eloquently put - that is such a perfect description of a city scene

The human race
A true reflection of a active city. Sympathy for the beggars yes,the thing is, some folks going by may not be sure of a job tomorrow.
