Re Corncakes comment:  I actually had one of my kitchen cabinets in my apartment bleed out smelly blood looking liquid.  I didn't know what to call it , but guessed it was something like resin.  Still, it seemed that the man's mental anguish transferred to the mirror that he looked in and caused psychic phenomenon.

It is alright  to consider other suggestions, but you have told a very fine and intriguing mystery and I feel it only needs small touches, not overworking.  They mystery of the mirror was great to me, it was any mirror that viewed the misery and mental anguish the man went through for that questionable lark for the government.  After all those years it may have made no difference if he told his children; it sounded as if he overrated the situation and suffered for it.

Well Kabu I think we have got to work on the mirror, perhaps originally it had been washed up on an Island obviously from a shipwreck, the guy who found it took it to the local trader

Of course the the wooden surround was warped and needed to be replaced, This was completed by one of the Islanders, He used a resin which was stable as long as it did not become damp. The mirror was sold on to a tourist and after many years ended up in the old house. Slowly the resin deteriorated and began to seep from the wooden surround. This  produced a creaking sound as the surround eased from the pressure, the resin which was blood red trickled slowly down the glass. Only playing.

A very good story. I really got into it and thought it might even be true when I read it.

Good advice
You and Wiley have a wonderful weekend and rest.  Do you all shoot of fireworks for Canadian Day like we do with July 4th?  Some of my neighbors have been shooting off fireworks all week.  Rosie thinks someone is around the house and starts barking. Good watch dog.

Precious
Happy Canadian Day...I agree with WileyJohn your man should be Canadian, French of course!  The idea of burying the mirror with the man sounds like a great ending for the mirror/LB

I don't think you need ideas... not you with your unbound imagination... Its your baby... you birthed it so as good parent you can own it and yes... be "precious " about it.  Just feel within you what this characters you've created are like and write them accordingly...  I'll be here waiting for that ending that may or may not come :-)  xoxoxo
