I agree with Sam. The fact remains that if you lay a pistol on a table, it will remain there until picked up. The fact also remains that when you arrest the bad guy then release him back into society then nothing will change. If you kill a snake, then it will not bite you again.

It is a local, municipal right to establish a town's official militia
And the not so well regulated yahoos, by implication, should be denied access to weaponry by the local government. In any event, it is their call. If the democratically elected local government is being challenged by tyrannical gangs of hoodlums, it is not only their right, but their responsibility to disarm the gangs at the borders of their town. If your town is not engaged in a war against a criminal element or marauding warlords, and your town decides it is just fine to hunt deer among the bedsheets and the housewives, that is again YOUR choice. Just give us all fair warning so we can avoid coming anywhere near you and don't expect the next town over to let you drive the arsenal in your pickup truck through THEIR streets.

With no control whatsoever, the bad guys are out of control..
My opinion is we need to make it very, very hard, impossible would be good - for criminals and insane people to have access to guns. Law abiding citizens should have full rights to their freedom and individual desires - from gun enthusiasts to gays.
