The crows have to fly down the chimney pipe and into the basement so I can shoot 'em off the clothes line wire I have had there. Lovely post.

I love this post.  I'm so glad that I came back here and read it before today's post.  Now I can follow up with the second part.

It seems the smartest of birds will get its way
sadly that is why turkeys have to many young...  most are not expected to survive

Nature is cruel Kabu but people eat turkeys and some don't have much of a life. Crows are cunning old devils, but I have always fancied one as a pet.

It was an absorbing story  written with sensitivity. Yes, stupid turkeys as they are called. The crows are foxy and they use their guile quite effectively, I think one or two of them less seen, would not missed.  ... You asked about the ancients and I was set thinking ...  just in case, you may see the reply here

Kabu
This was a sweet story. I want to let you know I will not be writting perhaps not until next week of later. I am again in bed and commanded by my doctor to remain there until at least Friday, I am extremely tired and boring. I just thought others might see this on your commensts page and understand why I am not posting any progress reports. God bless you lady.

Kabu

It's no accident that 'turkey' is pretty well synonymous with 'stupid', LOL. My own relationship with turkeys is strictly gastronomical, and even then it's not a close one.

I much prefer pheasant, for example, although one doesn't get it very often. Of course there's Cornish hen, and sometimes grouse...And then there's duck in its many iterations, as Peking duck, for example, which is interesting for several reasons, one being that the politically correct version of Peking, Beijing, has not caught up with it yet...

And I do like crows, although not necessarily on my plate. But they're among the smartest birds we have around here, and I sure hope Wiley doesn't shoot any of 'em...

The practicing of the pellet shooting is fodder for a lot of stories around our place. Lots of practicing going on here, too.

I would feel pretty good if wiley came out here and got rid of a few of
black crows that seem to be growing in population way too fast.

Nature's dark side..along with the beauty comes the shadow..
as in life..food chains, cruelty, death. This reminds me of a Native American prayer; can't remember the exact wording but the message is about being grateful for a successful hunt, revering and thanking the animal/s for sacrificing their life for the survival of others. And respecting that sacrifice by never destroying any form of life needlessly.
Great post, Dear Kabu - 'tis nice read you again.

Oh, how sad..well if Wiley John decides to do that, I won't feel sorry one bit for sure. Thanks for the visit Kabu and never mind you definitely don't need mascara.

maybe that one chick unknowingly sacrificed itself for the rest of them...
not that Ma Turkey couldn't have taken care of them but a determined crow can be a dangerous nuisance...no wonder crows have such a "haunted" reputation....

I learned a lot about the behavior of turkeys and crows while reading this. As the old saying goes we learn something new every day.

Yes, nature is sometimes cruel, Grandmummy.  But it's good to know and remember that what is lost  can also be reborn.

Never liked those black crows... Once while visiting a bridge castle in old London one of them took my brand new watch off my wrist!!!  I was little and still remember getting so upset about it.  Now that I know they go after little defenseless chicks I am even less of a crow lover.  Good post Kabu :-)  xoxoxo

I had no idea crows would go after little chicks.
I know they're scavengers and road-kill diners, but never knew they'd actually go out and hunt. Kinda funny the way both people and turkeys go out of their way to save the stray at the expense of the good chicks.  Nice allegory, Kabu!
