I have not been watching any news or reading any newspapers
so I have sheltered myself from the world and its woes.  I can't participate in the world at present.

I think it's as good or bad out there as it ever was
It's just depends on how we feel on a particular day - whether it;s overwhelming or not. If anything I think people were operating under some delusions during so called boom phases which means that we were not looking ahead and not seeing things as they really were. Best go. I have work to do

It certainly is sad to see the world getting increasingly selfish and nasty. I remember as a child, growing up with a boy and not thinking twice about it. When I was in my twenties someone asked me who the Indian boy was. I was puzzled, "I don't know any Indians." They persisted and eventually I realised they meant Geoffrey. But I'd never, ever thought of him as anything other than "one of us".

It is easy to see the shadows in the world today
The third world and Muslim states are being told to hate the West, the West are being taught that all Muslims are terrorists and in actual fact the main effect of this is that an aweful lot of Muslims think that westerners hate them and a lot of Westerners think that all Muslims want to kill them when it's just the same power hungry few that it has always been, it's just these days that few have mass media so they can stir the pot with a much bigger spoon. Governments have always been corrupt, often short sighted, self interested and downright stupid, rarely long sighted and clever (and those are often unpopular) but if you look at the sickest part of society you will see only the shadows.  I prefer to look at people, to talk to them and learn about them as individuals and as a culture, and by doing so it becomes easy to find the light in which the shadows are cast.

R I posted my over 30 age discrimination experience at a Costi’s coffee house in New York on dsr tchr’s comment page. I contributed an additional example to a discussion on a Republican’s idea to get rid of the Civil Rights Act and the consequences in restaurants love. BC-A, Bill’s RJLst

I know it seems much more violent and frightening than it used to.
But I believe if we analyze the reason it seems this way is the panic attack newscasters, the million repeats of every detail of every lame terrorist wannabe, every shootout between cops and punks. It used to happen about as much statistically, I mean. There were fewer people in the '60s when the nightly news wasn't "infotainment." We didn't get video from cell phones or YouTube replays on CNN, NBC, etc... We just hear about it sooner, more often. It's very distressing.

There are definitely a lot of sad issues facing our world today and tragedies that make us go, "Why?"

LIke you I do not believe that children notice the differences. Very often I have found it to be the adults who showed children the "way," the word way being in quotes because it is not the true way in life.

You are right, the world is falling apart. Unfortunately, people thrive on the despair of others. Take a look at all of this reality crap on the television. This is our entertainment. Wholesome shows are few and far between.
