Ominous is also a good word. I think the most sinister part of the entire story is that everything was so sneaking and subtle. Even when things were blatantly wrong, it was all subdued, as is often the case in abusive situations. The sisters and I are still debriefing, all of these years later. Since we rarely talked openly about it while at home, we are nowadays being validated by each other. We all saw and felt the same things...that what happened there was wrong, that there was something within the home that was very...'off'.

Yes, I think stunned was the right word. I think he got my meaning, but didn't want to. That's why he played the silliness act on me....a distraction tactic. Not an effective one, though. Little kids are more perceptive than most adults would like to think.

You're right about that. The good ones get taken while the bad ones remain sometimes. It was obvious that Mother was nervous about something, that's for sure. Those tight sheets were ridiculous. To this day I cannot stand to have my comforters tucked in at all, I kick them free if they are.
