I totally agree; young learners are fragile enough with name calling! I was in the business for my entire career and some of the things that students told me teachers had said boggled my mind! I spent most of my time in the at risk population and counselors can be very demeaning when they base their assessment on grades and motivation! I had to put out so many fores and rebuild self esteem that I wanted to get in the faces of my collogues but tenure is a good and bad thing in education and the union is another story! Administrators have to build cases and it can take up to nine years to get rid of a bad teacher! I am with you, I would not tolerate name calling or use of words that can be demeaning or cause a student to lose self confidence! Even though I had the at risk population I must say that I had some of the smartest kids in the district! They just didn't fit the traditional classroom mode for learning! sam
