Really trying to learn a language is very hard.  The trick is not to get too hung up on how you sound at first and just forge ahead with whatever you have, which may not be enough.  A very big thing is trusting your listener not to be too critical, or else your urge and ability simply dry up.  Humility helps.

Ever since I met this guy fortry years ago and heard his perfectly self-torpedoing little speech, it's an anecdote I've loved to re-tell.  It was fun - and a little startling - to write it down phonetically. I also wasn't sure whether it would work as well in print, so thank you for your comment!

This is just perfect! No excent...
My next door neighbor had a slight "Cherman" accent, and a number of folk sayings. I thought his English was unusually clear and cogent.
