I say amen to that.

I think our society is a bit over the Dr. Spock edge sometimes,
as child rearing moves away from teaching discipline and getting along with others, respecting mom, dad and other grownups -- and leans toward indulgence of all whims. It's not healthy, not realistic, and will produce a rude shock when the darling adorable children become obnoxious twenty-somethings. Having said that, I love a cute kid photo.

Re: one binder
Same situation with me - not only one binder, but with a lot of pages left over!  Today taking pix of kids is a little like cell phones - too much.  Throwaway pictures, throwaway phone calls - nothing much is transmitted - electronic gestures replace human gestures.  Or something.  Loved your poem.

I could put every photo my mom took of me as a child into just one binder. On the flipside, my kids' stepmom takes pictures of them when they're just sitting there...breathing or something....it's a bit much, or so they tell me...when they go over to visit.

Re: sense of humah
You're very gracious - I'm having fun with it, and I'll try not to disappoint.

Re: photo memories
Problem is, my son and his wife are photobuffs and we're on the third album.  I've seen him from enough angles drinking his bottle, and I'm ready to move on.  I prefer him in person anyway.  Besides, I'm not sure that more candid photos now will cure my wistful longing later on..

Re: For me being flat broke when my kids were little I just couldn't afford
PreCISEly!  That's where I'm heading in the next poem

Our family camera was a leatherette box with a lever on the side.  In the hole in the front I could see something like a safety pin that, I was told, was the shutter. The camera pulled apart so you could (haha) load the film, a process that required considerable skill and luck.  And did you succeed?  That was a problem in 3 parts: 1. crank it till you thought you saw a "1" in a tiny red circular window in the back(if you saw "2" and hadn't shot yet, you'd wasted one picture), 2. risk light, a steady hand and favor of the gods that you did everything right, then 3. spend dollars and time on developing a roll of 12 shots, of which maybe only a few were worth keeping.  The negatives were supposed to be precious, so you saved them carefully - and mislaid them.  It's odd, but you know what I remember best about that box?  The smell of it...

But here's the point - the present generation seems to have the cash and desire and technology that we never had  - it's a different ballgame.

For me being flat broke when my kids were little I just couldn't afford
to buy film and then pay for development so no I didn't take many and then if we go further back...Mum had a brownie and hardly ever took photos.
