Thanks.  I think what you said about Martinez is true of most good power pitchers.  Randy Johnson also has good numbers in the opponents batting average and on base percentage categories.  Another stat I've really begun to appreciate is "ratio" which was developed by the Rotisserie Baseball League.  Its hits plus walks, divided by innings pitched.  You can also multiply it by nine if you want to see what the number looks like for a nine inning game.  Its a very neat number for telling you how many base runners a pitcher allows.

Great post!  You know, Pedro Martinez always has a very low ERA, in part because he excels at strikeouts and in part because I think batters are still very intimidated by him and they swing half-heartedly at a lot of his pitches if he's on.  A cool stat I like is opponents batting average, because that gives you a truer picture of how pitchers have performed.  Another good stat is opponents on base percentage, because when you come right down to it, if you keep them off the bases, they have a hard time scoring runs.
