This is what I always thought they were called (that's what my mother told me when I was a teen) = Prophylactic: A preventive measure. The word comes from the Greek for "an advance guard," an apt term for a measure taken to fend off a disease or another unwanted consequence. I think I learned the word rubbers from my husband. LOL.

That is what everyone called them when we got old enough to talk of such things in school or on the playground. The first time I heard the word used to refer to rainboots, I thought it was hilarious! Why would someone call them by the name used for -- well for rubbers!

There are some words that need to be struck out of the dictionary. This
is among them, but I use it often here at home. LOL

Ha ha...my mother used it religiously to refer to rubber boots. We were always looking for our rubbers to wear on our feet when it was raining....weren't you? Needless to say we got practically laughed out of town for using this phrase when we moved out West. To them rubbers only meant one thing....
