We had these fears years ago in Australia. We had seen England struggling

with the costs involved with socialized health care and we were frightened.

Well we have choices, private and public(medicare). Some public clinics rely only on the medicare moneys but you take whatever DR. IS AVALIABLE. Some private clinics charge more than the medicare cover so you pay the difference, you get your chosen DR. though. You can have private cover which will give you the best Dr. in the best private hospital in the country. This will cost a single person about $1000 US. A year and it will get you free hospital and your DR. There may be a few small charges. Public hospital will  cover all costs but if the surgery isn't urgent the wait can take up to two years. ....or you pay for it which will cost. All urgent surgery goes to the top of the list...age doesn't count. I as the nurse on a public surgery ward, make the decision for the next days surgery. I have to understand what is urgent. Not the Gov. Age as I said is not the issue, nor is social status. There are always some theatres working in public hospitals to cover immediate emergencies.

Our system is far from perfect, far from really fair. I pay my private insurance each year....I can't include Wiley nor he me because we don't have dual citizenship. so I pay my private and when I pay my tax, a levy is taken from that for medicare. It isn't crippling and sure it annoys me but I pay it. Even though I am here in Canada...I pay it.

The city areas have better access to health care than country especially small or isolated communities, yet they pay the same levies and insurance premiums as I do. Not really fair except that if they need to be helicoptered to a city center, they won't have to pay the cost.

I don't for one moment call Australia a Communist country. We stand beside our Allie and friend the USA in every conflict and war.We have unfair dealings with our indigenous Australians and the problem is huge and ongoing but...we do try to have a Social conscience so that our people can all have access to basic human rights. Food, education housing and health care.

As I said at the start, we really thought that health care for all would ruin our country and cripple us forever but somehow it hasn't. Somehow we have higher employment figures this year than last and interest rates have risen slightly. In a few years you won't even be thinking about this because I am sure that whoever follows your current President will be glad that the other guy took the heat, the other guy dragged you forward towards  some protection for all your people and he /she may tweak it here and there but the USA will be up there with France and us and Canada etc.

yours Kabu.
