But....since they were already checking other red flags (eegarding internet postings), it would have then caused an alarm bell to go off.......

Indeed, there were plenty of red flags. But how do you prevent a major in the US Armed Forces from engaging in weapons training if he so wishes? We could say he shouldn't have been in that position in the first place, but how do you prevent that??
Maybe he should have been canned after his view came to light that suicide is justified when committed in the service of Allah, but can you imagine the firestorm of protest?
