I sent a playful and placatory email.The response was something like "So??What do you want me to say?".
my reply:
"That'll do" or word to that immediate effect, and I wished him a happy day and thaned him for his reasoned responses.

A child on Halloween Evening asked me, as I was sitting in a long line of
people along the sidewalk as they passed in the neighborhood, "Are you the old lady with the candy??" I was. And you are an old codger, but we don't age and learn for nuttin', huh??
