Re:  SpitFire70 ~
It was a trip!   On top of that, she was very, very hard of hearing, and I was always noticing old house sounds that I'm sure she could not hear.

Re:  Nileangel ~
She was the sweetest old thing.  I visited her now and then for two years after that.  I loved all of her collected doo-dads, the large windows with old lace curtains, and the beautiful china tea set.  I never asked to take a tour above or below her living area on the first floor.  I wish I had.

Re:  WileyJohn ~
I forgot to give credit to the Kansas City Public Library photo archives for the picture of the house.  I was thrilled to run into it when I was looking for something else, because during my teen years when I was visiting there, I didn't have a camera.

Re:  elinjo ~
I've never before heard them called "conkers" and I'd never heard of the game of conkers.  I sure do like that google thing.  We always collected them and then just made up our own games with them.

I wonder what happened to the hundreds of antique salt and pepper shakers.  She collected them and displayed them on every surface in the parlor.   After she passed away, the house was torn down to make room for a modern church that today stands on that spot off of Independence Avenue.

Your delightful account reminds me of a lonely old lady who lived in a dilapidated house on the corner of the street where I lived, when I was a child. We (the children on the street) were convinced she was a witch and usually steered clear of her. However she had a horse-chesnut tree  and in the autumn we would sneak into her garden and collect the 'conkers'. If she caught sight of us she'd be out like a flash and we'd be gone!

I loved this. I could see you clearly as can be looking like Dorothy walking up the steps. I half expected to see Toto. I love these little videos.
