Re: johnmacnab
It was a longbow and I ended up with a large red spot with purple bruising on my left wrist as did one son and one grandson.  So, son with the archery equipment is going to make leather wrist bands for all of us before the next go-round.  But, I decided there was no need to find a buffalo.  My attention has been re-directed to a huge wild turkey that has been frequenting the area.  Every afternoon, she (it is a hen turkey) comes out of the lake woods and eats in this big sunny meadow.  I've got my plans for Thanksgiving.  LOL

Taps

Were you using a longbow, Taps?   A dangerous tool - for the archer.  Any time I've tried a longbow it's taken the skin off my wrist.  Try a crossbow.

We have a small herd of Buffalo a few miles away, and I wouldn't dream of getting close enough to use any kind of bow.  The animals are ginormous.

I would have thought your blood would surely have upstaged them as well! How frustrating to get closer and closer and still have the arrow do what it wants! lol sam

Re: Justi
Son Stephen always grills any meat and he roasted the potatoes.  But he loves for Mom to bring a pie, especially any kind of fruit pie with ice cream.

Re: Pat_B
I'm sure there will be a next time, and if and when, I will remember to follow your advice.  At least I hope I will remember it.

If there's a next time, aim above the target. Way above.
And be glad you didn't hit a buffalo. Can you imagine how long it would take to scrape the fat and tissue off the skin with a Bowie knife before you could hang it up to cure?  That reminds me what I've read about the old time Inuit women. They wore their teeth down to the nubs chewing sealskins to get them clean enough to make into mukluks and parkas. Woman's work....

That is heavy duty work. You are brave to try. I love it that the boys want mama to get one big one! Who cooked today? Sounds delicious. You can make memories come up and dance. I love your work.

Re: lustorlove
That was what was wrong with my shooting of the arrows.  My arms are just about the weakest thing of me and my arrows kept falling far short of where I wanted them to go.  But it was fun to try.

that was brave of you to even attempt it, I don't think my arms have the strength to even try

Next time, be Robin Hood--

It was a tv show in the 50s, I dimly recall, that caught my imagination... and when I drew a bow for the first time in high school, I had the stance down... and while I wouldn't get all A for my arching, I would get a good solid B or B+. Now I consider your target practice, and myself shooting buffalo, while you might not get a robe from the deal, I would sting the beasts with a not-quite bullseye hit, and probably get trampled.

Re: Kabu
Maybe next time I'll try being a Pilgrim with a musket.  It's just turkey time and pumpkin pie.  Sons were talking about going to a firing range next time.  You know, I've never tried to shoot anything more deadly than a BB gun and that was a long time ago.

Re: adnohr
I can't even imagine trying to clean and dress a buffalo even if I stuck an arrow in his rump.

LOL, TAPS! I can picture you trying so hard to imagine eating the beast...as a second dessert. Nope - better leave the feathers on the turkeys.
