I think that he is suffering so much that he cannot think straight.
I think that he fears sorrow like the plague and would rather obsess about things that he just MIGHT be able to handle, like finances. Remind him gently that his salvation lies in the employment bureau, the want ads in the paper, etc. Going to places and filling out applications and not quitting, as that is the only way to get him back onto his rightful path.
Then he can suffer your mom's loss normally, employed and moving forward again.
When I lost my job, I just never gave up until a great one came along by surprise and pulled me out of my fear zone. It took a long time and I had to return to my folks' house as an adult, not easy for anyone, them or me.
Good can still happen, but one must work to make it so.
I wish that you didn't have these worries about him, but we all worry about those that we love.
