It is good to move things around
It helps the mind to remain aware and focused on your surroundings...  I try moving things every now and then just to force myself to think a little

Rearranging furniture is so much fun...we did it recently and really gave
our home a neat look!  I've made sure to purchase "light" furniture so even I can move it. hehe

I understand...
Forever rearranging around here.  My mother kept everything the same.  I love the freedom of movement.  Just re-did my middle girls room this weekend!

TAPS, I have just been doing this the past 2 weeks at my home...in every room, change upon change...I had to stop so I could go on my trip......oh but I'm hoping to find some goodies while in Maine. I'm obsessed as well so understand.  but, with the help of son and husband and at times pro movers...Please do not hurt yourself... However, I do know the dust ---- oh my goodness, I have attacked every hidden nook and cranny.  UGH ~ those bunnies were welded in some areas, and yes, especially behind my son's comp on cords and on the back of the desk etc.  I think maybe the fan in the computer draws the bunnies by some magical lure.  I'm not certain...I must say goodnight my dear Lady, but, please just be careful and enjoy your new surroundings ~ xoxo Elyse

Be careful if you move the bookcases. Long ago and far away my aunt moved a simple easy chair. Soon afterwards she suffered heart failure and became fatally ill suddenly love. BC-A, Bill’s RJLst

Re: Justi
There's nothing wrong with old and cranky.  It's only the young who look down upon it.   We can always move things around in our daydreams.

Re: Decshack
When I take everything off of the bookcases so that I can move them (or have them moved), it is the perfect time for dusting everything and using furniture polish on the wood.  It always smell so good right afterward.   Pitiful is wishing we had some mice.  She still remembers the ones she caught in the big house that she moused before we came here.  I can tell she does.  I've even thought of buying one from Petco for her for a Christmas present and turning it loose on Christmas day for her to stalk.

Re: Darson
My sons will do it for me if I ask them.  It's just something I've always done for myself until now.    And, I've just about worked up enough gusto to get started on it all.

Re: HAHAHAHAHA. Nautikos
I think moving things around is a woman's thing.   I'd rather tackle my big bookshelves than mess with those computer cords.  LOL

TAPS

The very thought makes me begin to perspire - I have never moved anything, and shall not do so in future! Not in in this study, nor anywhere else in this house!

Mind you, I have had to add bookshelves, in the basement because I ran out of space here and everywhere else! And Pat's idea of 'donating' books made me sweat even more! I'd rather donate a kidney than give away any of my books!

And that tangle of computer and phone and speaker and printer and fax and whatever cords? I don't even want to think of that, though I am convinced they're involved in a life-and-death struggle with the dust bunnies...

Oh, you sound like me...! I always rearrange or paint a wall this time of year...it's because I know I'm doomed to being stuck in the house for several months, while it's so cold...I think it's a type of nesting instinct. As for the bookcases, could you maybe make dinner for the hunky young neighbor and talk him into it??? (Granted that you have such a neighbor...most guys will do anything for a good meal...!) And I plan it all out before the fact, too. Made me laugh that you said it confused the children...ha ha ha..that it does. Always want to keep 'em guessing!!!

I recently found a very good reason for moving things.
This time of year in our climate the mice move into the house. Suddenly my dust allergies are acting up big-time. I finally figured out how the mice connect with my allergy for dust. After capturing two mice last evening, under kitchen appliances. I forgot to clear the dust out from under the fridge and one cabinet on wheels. Those mice run around in that dust, then run across where I lay down, lol. My Fall dust allergy was a great mystery until now.... It is time for me to do Spring Cleaning, including wiping the dust off everything on my bookshelves, too....

Your room sounds a lot like mine from the computer, library and all those dusty chords...I'm not much into rearranging. Once something is put a certain way I have every intention of keeping it that way.

A lot of feelings of a moment get tied up in all the details of that moment
including the setting.  Now and then, changing the setting also releases some of that pent up emotional energy.  It is a psychological/neurolinguistical thing.  That's why we need a change of scenery every so often, whether a vacation, or a major furniture shuffle.

TAPS
My mother used to do this when I was a kid. I'd come home from school and think I walked into the wrong place. It didn't get any better when my brother and I reached our teens. She'd make us do the moving. I think it had something to do with the fact she spent so much time there. Sure, she got out, but she never got away, so for her home wasn't the comfortable retreat it was to everyone else in the family. It was the same four walls days after day, filled with the same stuff in the same places. I imagine that would get n anyone's nerves after a while.

Taps - I hope you like the new rearrangement better and to your liking for a conducive place to write.

I get so frustrated I cry sometimes. i used to do what you are talking about, move all things as I chose, when I chose. Now I want to rearrange as much as I once did, but I would be hard put to move a bean can full of sound across the room. I don't want hired assistance in my house anymore tossing around my stuff. George is great when he isn't working but he is either working away or on one of his projects most of the time. I fear I have grown old and cranky; I have no idea what your problem is. LOL Fun post.

I wish you well! Now it is time for your son to find a woman so his bedroom can be a den! lol  Wow! That is one loaded room! I had a den/bedroom at my other house and it has been wonderful using the third bedroom at my new place for a den/library! At least the tough one has a mental vision! sam

I, too, suffer from this compulsion.
Perhaps it's a way to winnow some things from your bookshelves that you haven't used in a year or so, just pack 'em up and donate 'em to your library or the Goodwill or someone. That way, next time you feel a bout of "shuffle-itis" coming on, it won't be such a weighty project.

Now I suggest you spend acouple of nights sleeping in motel or a B&B
somewhere and get the need for "Change" out of the system....that or at least hire some muscle. It never fails to amaze me all those dusty miles of cords in assorted colors and sizes.

My daughter had that bug too and she moved everything herself, but she doesnt have the items like you, I am just now trying to get the clutter up and put away in my room.  Good luck in your move.
